Exact age, not rounded

Most quick calculations subtract birth years and stop there, which is wrong for anyone whose birthday has not yet occurred this year. This calculator walks the calendar properly, handling month lengths and leap years, so the result matches what a form or an official document expects.

How the calculation works

Years = difference in years, reduced by 1 if the birthday has not yet passed
Months = remaining whole months since the last birthday
Days = remaining days, borrowed from the previous month's length

Where an exact age is required

  • School and college admission cut-off dates
  • Government examination eligibility windows
  • Passport and visa applications
  • Insurance premium bands, which often change on the birthday itself
  • Retirement and pension date calculations

Use the second date field to check age as on a specific cut-off date rather than today — that is usually what an eligibility rule actually asks for.

Frequently asked questions

How is exact age calculated?

By comparing full years first, then whole months since the last birthday, then the remaining days — accounting for varying month lengths and leap years.

Can I calculate age on a future date?

Yes. Change the second date to any cut-off date to see the age as on that day.

Does it handle leap years?

Yes. The calculation walks actual calendar dates, so 29 February and leap-year day counts are handled correctly.
