What CPC tells you
Cost per click is spend divided by clicks. It sets the price of traffic, which combined with your conversion rate sets the price of a customer. Two campaigns with identical conversion rates but different CPCs produce entirely different unit economics.
The formula
Cost per conversion = CPC ÷ ( conversion rate / 100 )
The second line is the one that matters. A ₹12 click at a 3% conversion rate costs ₹400 per customer. A ₹25 click at a 9% conversion rate costs ₹278 — the more expensive traffic is cheaper where it counts.
Worked example
₹25,000 spend, 3,125 clicks
- Total spend
- ₹25,000
- Clicks
- 3,125
- CPC
- ₹8.00
- Clicks per ₹1,000
- 125
What clicks cost in India
| Sector | Search CPC range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Local services | ₹8 – ₹35 | Varies sharply by city |
| E-commerce | ₹5 – ₹25 | Product terms cheaper than category terms |
| Education & coaching | ₹25 – ₹120 | Highly competitive around admission cycles |
| Insurance & finance | ₹60 – ₹300 | Among the most expensive keyword sets |
| B2B software | ₹40 – ₹200 | Small audience, high intent |
Treat these as orientation, not targets. Actual costs depend on city, language, device, competitor density and how tightly your keywords match intent.
Lowering CPC
- Improve Quality Score — relevance, expected CTR and landing page experience all reduce what you pay per position.
- Build a real negative keyword list and review the search terms report weekly.
- Test long-tail keywords; they cost less and usually convert better.
- Adjust bids by device, time of day and location once you have enough data to see the pattern.
- Consider whether position two or three at a much lower CPC produces more total conversions than position one.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good CPC?
There is no universal figure. Judge CPC against the value of a conversion: a ₹200 click is fine if a customer is worth ₹20,000, and a ₹5 click is too expensive if nobody buys.
How do I reduce cost per click on Google Ads?
Raise Quality Score through tighter ad-to-keyword relevance and better landing pages, add negative keywords, and shift budget toward long-tail terms.
Is manual or automated bidding cheaper?
Automated bidding usually raises CPC while lowering cost per conversion, because it bids up for users likely to convert. Judge it on conversion cost, not click cost.
