Two rates, two different questions
Engagement rate by followers answers "how active is this audience relative to its size?" It is what brands request in a rate card, because followers are public and comparable across accounts.
Engagement rate by reach answers "of the people who actually saw this, how many responded?" It is the better performance signal, because Instagram shows a post to a fraction of followers — often 10 to 30 percent — and reach frequently exceeds followers entirely when a Reel travels.
The formulas
ER by reach = ( Likes + Comments + Saves + Shares ) ÷ Reach × 100
Saves and shares are only visible in your own insights, so a rate calculated from the outside will always run lower than one calculated from inside the account. Say which method you used when you quote a number.
Benchmarks for Indian accounts
| Followers | Weak | Average | Strong |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 5,000 | Under 3% | 3% – 7% | Above 8% |
| 5,000 – 20,000 | Under 2% | 2% – 5% | Above 6% |
| 20,000 – 100,000 | Under 1.5% | 1.5% – 3.5% | Above 4% |
| 100,000 – 500,000 | Under 1% | 1% – 2.5% | Above 3% |
| Above 500,000 | Under 0.8% | 0.8% – 2% | Above 2.5% |
Engagement rate falls as accounts grow. That is normal and not a sign of decline — a larger audience is a less tightly connected one. Judge an account against its own size band.

What brands should actually check
- Comment quality. Real sentences beat strings of emoji. Pods and comment services are easy to spot once you read fifteen of them.
- Save rate. Saves indicate genuine utility and correlate better with conversion than likes.
- Audience geography. An Indian brand paying for an audience that is 60% overseas is buying nothing.
- Consistency. One viral Reel inside an otherwise flat feed is not a reliable base for pricing.
- Story reach. Often a better predictor of link clicks than feed engagement.
Raising engagement rate
- Post fewer, better pieces rather than filling a schedule.
- Write for saves — carousels that teach something get saved and re-shown by the algorithm.
- Ask a specific question in the caption. "What do you think?" gets nothing; "which of these two would you pick?" gets replies.
- Reply to every comment in the first hour. It measurably extends distribution.
- Use Stories to drive traffic and the feed to build reach — they do different jobs.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good Instagram engagement rate?
For accounts under 20,000 followers, 3–6% is healthy. Above 100,000 followers, 1–2.5% is normal. Smaller accounts almost always show higher rates.
Should engagement rate include saves and shares?
Yes if you have access to them. They are strong signals of value. Note that external tools cannot see them, so an outside estimate will be lower than yours.
Why is my reach lower than my follower count?
Instagram shows each post to a portion of followers, typically 10–30%. Reach beyond that depends on how the initial group responds in the first hour.
How do brands verify engagement is genuine?
By reading comments for substance, checking audience geography and age in insights, and looking for consistency across recent posts rather than one outlier.
